"Israel: Past, Present, and Future" Application
Israel: Past, Present, and Future is Hillel at the University of Vermont's introduction to Israel course, where we will explore the very basics of Israel, Judaism, Palestine, and dive into the culture, conflict, and different narratives, through the lens of history, present, and what comes next. The purpose of this eight class course is to educate UVM students about Israel's history along with the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, shining an intentional light on the basics required to start understanding the complexities surrounding Israel, Palestine, the conflict, and the cultures. We will also discuss ways to talk about Israel and Palestine in class, on campus, and beyond.
This selective class seeks students who are greatly motivated to gain a deeper understanding of Israel. Throughout the classes, participants will hear from a variety of speakers and be expected to engage with multi-media sources and a wide variety of perspectives, while asking questions, engaging in group discussions, and partaking in written and verbal reflections.
We will be meeting Mondays throughout the semester, 7:30-9:00 at the Hillel Center. The specific dates for this course are: Feb 17, Feb 24, March 23, April 6, April 13, April 20, and April 27. Those who successfully complete the course will receive a $200 stipend, and dinner will be catered every week from different local restaurants.
Class participants will form a learning community to further one another's understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Israel and Palestine while learning to advocate for their own perspectives and engage in tough conversations. All participants will be required to participate in the classes.
We will provide all necessary materials, and after-class work will be minimal.
* Applications are due Feb. 16th.
